Palin’s missing index

Friday, November 20th, 2009

A lot’s been made of Sarah Palin not including an index in her new book. The Washington Post called it “a no-no in political Washington”. Slate wrote that it was “the governor’s most mavericky move yet.” The New Republic even produced its own index of the book, so readers could skip “a pretty tough slog.”

Has anybody noticed that the month’s other political bestseller, David Plouffe’s “Audacity to Win”, also lacks an index? (Or at least my version does.)

I don’t know why the Palin and Plouffe books don’t have indexes, but I am sure it appears there’s a double standard in the way that so much is being made out of it in Palin’s case – and nothing is being asked about it in Plouffe’s.

Palin’s Pen

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The Associated Press is reporting that Sarah Palin is writing her memoirs, to be published by HarperCollins next spring. This is exciting news for Sarah Palin and exactly what many of her supporters and admirers had hoped she would do as part of a long-term process to improve her national reputation.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, given the tough environment and lingering negative impressions from the campaign, Gov. Palin would be best off laying low for the next few months, and then reintroduce herself to the nation at a strategically good time. This book is a perfect vehicle for doing just that, as her statements to the AP reflect:

“There’s been so much written about and spoken about in the mainstream media and in the anonymous blogosphere world, that this will be a wonderful, refreshing chance for me to get to tell my story, that a lot of people have asked about, unfiltered,” the Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate said during a brief telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press.

If the book is able to tell her story and reintroduce her to the nation (as opposed to simply re-fighting yesterday’s battles and/or settling old scores), I hope it will go a long way towards strengthening her national image and making her a more effective party leader.

Palin and the bear

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Coming soon to a cable TV station near you: TLC just released a YouTube video of a recent interview with Sarah Palin that has an unfortunate image of the Governor relaxing on a bear rug in her office. Seriously:

I’ve defended Sarah Palin after recent media criticism. But I fear this latest video, coming just a few months after the unfortunate turkey-slaughter clip, is fodder for cable TV and her opponents.
