Manhattan Joyrides

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

One of President Obama’s better jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner was blaming Sasha and Malia for the Air Force One photo-op over Manhattan:

“Sasha and Malia aren’t here tonight because they’re grounded. You can’t just take Air Force One on a joyride to Manhattan.”

But in a questionable use of government resources, The New York Daily News reports that tonight President and Mrs. Obama are taking Air Force One to Manhattan for a personal night on the town:

President Obama makes his first trip to New York Saturday to enjoy a date night on Broadway with First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Obamas plan to take in “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” at the Belasco Theater, the Daily News has learned. …. The First Couple will be traveling on one of the smaller planes in the Air Force VIP fleet instead of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

UPDATE: Here is the video of President Obama’s comments about Air Force One ground rules on at the Correspondents Dinner. It’s even better in context:

Obama’s speedy time-warp

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

A Republican Senate aide sends an email asking “whom this line was referring in the President’s weekly address today on Judge Sotomayor?”

“But what I hope is that we can avoid the political posturing and ideological brinksmanship that has bogged down this process, and Congress, in the past.”

Maybe someone involved in the debate on the last Supreme Court nomination? From then-Senator Obama’s interview on This Week on January 29, 2006:

“Well, I will be supporting the filibuster because I think Judge Alito, in fact, is somebody who is contrary to core American values, not just Liberal values, you know.”

Also worth pointing out that the small group of senators who participated in that “filibuster” include the now-President, Vice President, Secretary of State, Senate Majority Leader, Senate Majority Whip, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman – which should undermine the sincerity of their current demands for a speedy confirmation process and no filibuster.

The difference between Obama and Bush

Friday, May 29th, 2009

On MSNBC this afternoon, David Axelrod said that President Obama is not too impressed with the White House mess:

I don’t want to create a fuss at the White House, but I think he is not — he doesn’t favor the white house burgers. Likes to go out to the top-notch burger places.

Obama must have pretty high standards, because speaking in Michigan yesterday, President Bush said “eating meals prepared by the White House kitchen staff” were among the things he missed most since leaving office.
